π Key Rules That Confuse Americans
Offside Rule
You can't be closer to the goal than the second-to-last opponent when the ball is played by a teammate. Think of it like this: no cherry-picking allowed!
Exception: You can't be offside in your own half or from throw-ins, corner kicks, or goal kicks.
Added Time
Unlike American sports, the clock doesn't stop. Instead, the referee adds time at the end of each half for delays (injuries, celebrations, etc.).
Typical: 2-5 minutes added in each half.
No Timeouts
There are no timeouts in football! The game flows continuously for 45 minutes, then a 15-minute halftime, then another 45 minutes.
Substitutions: Only 3-5 subs allowed per team, and once you're off, you can't come back.
Draws Are Allowed
Unlike most American sports, games can end in a tie during regular season play. In knockout competitions, there's extra time and potentially a penalty shootout.
